How to make cursive alphabet worksheets
Type your child's name
It goes at the top of every page, “Emma’s Cursive A”, and on the E page Emma writes her own name. Leave it empty for a class set.
Choose the letters
All 26 or just this week's, a page per letter or four to a page, with the alphabet chart and the page of joins. Pick a row size and one of 15 designs or plain.
Print and practice
Download the PDF and print it at 100%. Your child traces the gray letters, then writes each one alone on the empty rows.
What's in the PDF
- A cursive alphabet chart: every letter from Aa to Zz on handwriting lines
- A page for each letter: the capital and the small letter as a model, rows to trace and a row to write alone
- A word with each letter to trace, like apple, bear and cat, and your child's name on its own letter's page
- A page of joins: an, in, on, ow, br and short words like the, and, was and you
- Medium rows for beginners in second and third grade, large or small rows, 15 designs or plain, US Letter or A4

In what order to teach the letters
Most cursive programs start with the small letters, in families that begin with the same stroke: c, a, d, g, o and q start like a c; i, t, u, w, r and s climb up from the baseline; e, l, h, k, b and f are loops. Tap one family in the maker and you have a week of pages.
The capitals come next, once the small letters flow, and then the joins that make cursive quick. The page of joins practices the ones from the baseline (an, in, it, un), the ones that leave the letter high after o, w and b (on, ow, wi, br), and four short words to put them together.
Which cursive is it?
The letters are traditional American cursive, the style most US schools teach, set in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface made by a type foundry for teaching handwriting. Every small letter joins the next, the i dots and t crosses come at the end, and the capitals have the classic loops.
If your school uses a different program, a few capitals may look a little different from your child's book. The small letters and the way they join are much the same.

Questions
- How do I make cursive alphabet worksheets?
- Type your child's name in the maker above, choose all 26 letters or a few, a page per letter or four to a page, a row size and a design, and download the PDF. It's free, with no account.
- In what order should kids learn cursive letters?
- Usually the small letters first, in groups that start the same way: c, a, d, g, o, q; then i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j; then the loops e, l, h, k, b, f; then the rest. Capitals come after, once the small letters are smooth.
- What age do kids learn cursive?
- Most US schools that teach cursive start in second or third grade, around ages 7 to 8. A child who writes print letters confidently and holds a pencil comfortably is usually ready.
- What is the cursive alphabet chart?
- The first page of the PDF: every letter from A to Z, capital and small, as a model on handwriting lines. Keep it on the desk or the fridge while your child practices. You can leave it out.
- Can I print only some letters?
- Yes. Tap the letters you want, like this week's c, a, d and g, and the PDF has just those pages. Choose four letters to a page for a shorter set.
- Is it free, and does it print on US Letter?
- Yes and yes: it's free with no account, on US Letter or A4. Print at 100% or “actual size” so the lines keep their size.
