How to use a potty chart

Put the chart at your child's eye level in the bathroom and keep the stickers next to it. Let your child choose and place the sticker straight away, every time: the moment matters more than the reward at the end of the week.

Start with an easy goal, like sitting on the potty, so the first stickers come quickly. Add “went in the potty” and “dry all morning” when those start to happen, and drop goals your child has mastered.

Keep it positive

Accidents are part of learning, so a missed box is simply an empty box, never a cross or a frowning face. Praise the try, not only the success. If the chart stops being fun or your child pushes back, put it away for a week or two and start again later.

Questions

When should I start using a potty chart?

When your child shows signs of being ready, such as staying dry for a couple of hours, noticing a wet diaper or showing interest in the toilet. Many children show these signs somewhere between 18 months and 3 years, and every child is different.

What rewards work for potty training?

Small and immediate: the sticker itself is often enough, with a little treat for a full row, like choosing a bedtime story, a trip to the park or a small toy.

Is the potty chart free?

Yes. Make and download as many as you like, with no account or email address needed.

Can I change the goals?

Yes. Edit any line, remove the ones you don't need or add your own, up to ten goals on one chart.

Does the potty chart have pictures?

Yes, a small picture beside each goal (a potty, water drops for washing hands, a sun and a moon for dry mornings and nights), so toddlers can find their row. You can turn them off.

Should I use stickers or check marks?

Stickers work best for toddlers because choosing and placing one is part of the reward. Older children may be happy coloring in the box.
