Alphabet tracing worksheets

Alphabet tracing worksheets are pages of handwriting lines where a child traces each letter of the alphabet, then writes it alone. Type your child's name for the top of the pages and pick a design: you get an A4 PDF with an alphabet chart, then a page for every letter from A to Z with the capital, the small letter and a word to trace, and a dot where each letter starts. How to make alphabet tracing worksheets

  1. Type your child's name

It goes at the top of every page, “Isla’s Letter A”, and on the I page Isla traces her own name. Leave it empty for a class set.

  2. Choose the letters

All 26 or a few at a time, a page per letter or three or four to a page. Large rows for ages 3 to 5, medium for 5 to 7, and one of 15 designs or plain.

  3. Print and trace

Download the PDF and print it at 100%. Your child starts each letter at its dot, traces the grey letters, then writes alone.

What's in the PDF

  • An alphabet chart: every letter, capital and small, with its start dot
  • A page for each letter from A to Z: the capital and the small letter to trace, then a row to write alone
  • A word with each letter to trace, like apple, bear and cat, and your child's name on its own letter's page
  • Upright print letters on primary lines, in large rows for ages 3–5 or medium for 5–7
  • Fifteen illustrated designs or plain, on A4 or US Letter

How to teach the alphabet

Start with the letters in your child's name, then the rest a few at a time. Many teachers begin the capitals with the ones made of straight lines (L, F, E, H, T, I) and the small letters with c, o, a, d and g, which all start the same way. Tap those letters in the maker for a week's pages.

Show your child the dot: it's where the pencil goes down. Round letters like a, c, d, g, o and q start just right of the top and go round to the left; most other letters start at the top. Starting in the right place makes writing faster and neater later.

Print first, joined writing later

These worksheets are in print, the upright letters children learn first. Schools in New Zealand teach their own basic style, so a few letters may look a little different from your school's. The way into each letter is the same, and that's what the dots show.

Joined writing usually comes around Year 3 or 4; the name tracing worksheet gives your child their own name to practise in the meantime.

Questions

How do I make alphabet tracing worksheets?
Type your child's name in the maker above, choose all 26 letters or a few, a page per letter or several to a page, a row size and a design, and download the PDF. It's free, with no account.
What age are alphabet tracing worksheets for?
Most children start tracing letters at 3 or 4 and write them on their own by 5 or 6. Large rows suit ages 3 to 5; medium rows suit the first years of school.
Capital or lowercase letters first?
Many programs start with the capitals, which are made of simpler lines and are all the same height, and soon add the small letters, which children write most. Each page has both, the capital first.
Are these the letters my child's school teaches?
Close, but not exactly: New Zealand schools teach their own basic style, and a few letters differ a little. Where each letter starts, which the dots show, is the same.
What are the dots on the letters?
Each dot shows where to start the letter: at the top for most letters, and just right of the top for round ones like a, d and o, which go round to the left. You can turn the dots off.
Is it free, and does it print on A4?
Yes and yes: it's free with no account, on A4 or US Letter. Print at 100% or “actual size” so the lines keep their size.
